Hair Fall: 3 Real Reasons and What Actually Stops It

You are not losing your hair because of stress. You are losing it because a
specific, ordinary, testable thing pushed your hair out of its growth phase
early. Those are different problems, and only one of them is solved by
“eating well”.

The one thing to understand first

Every hair on your head grows, rests, then releases. It is normal to shed
about 50 to 100 strands a day. What people notice is not the daily number. It
is that a whole group of hairs, all resting at the same time, releases on the
same day. That is why a bad week can look like a bad month.

The frustrating part is that this is how hair behaves when it is healthy.
So the loss you are seeing is often a timing change, not a sudden new
problem.

Reason 1 — Your hair cycle is being interrupted

This is the most common reason and the least dramatic. Every hair has a
growth phase, a resting phase, and a release. Traction, heat, harsh chemical
treatments, and crash dieting all shorten the growth phase, which pushes hair
into shedding earlier than it should be.

What to check: compare a photo of your hairline from three
months ago with one from today, in the same light and at the same angle. A
visibly wider part or a receding hairline points here first.

What to do tonight: change one trigger at a time. Drop the
tight ponytails, tight buns, and frequent heat styling. Give it two full cycles
before you judge anything, because this one is slow by nature.

Reason 2 — Low iron, and how it actually causes shedding

This is the mechanism most people never hear explained. Your body does not
send iron to your hair by choice. It sends iron to the organs that keep you
alive, and your hair is not on that list. When your iron stores drop, your body
re-prioritises, and the hair follicle is the first thing to get cut off.

Here is the chain, step by step:

  1. Low iron means less oxygen carried to the scalp.
  2. Your follicle does not get the oxygen it needs to keep growing.
  3. It cuts the growth phase short.
  4. It drops into the shedding phase early.

That is why low iron shows up as hair loss rather than as a scalp problem.
The follicle is still alive. It is simply leaving early.

What to check: ask for a ferritin test, not
just a general “iron” panel. Ferritin is your stored iron. You can have a
normal haemoglobin reading while your stores are low, which is exactly why the
generic test keeps coming back fine.

What to do tonight: add iron to your regular meals. Red meat,
lentils, and dark greens are the practical options. If you are vegetarian or
low on red meat, say so when you book the test, because it changes what your
doctor looks at.

Reason 3 — Your thyroid sets the pace of every cell

Your thyroid gland sets the metabolic pace for every cell in your body, and
a hair follicle is a fast-turning cell. It is one of the first things to
notice when that pace drops.

What to check: the same blood draw can cover both this and
iron. Ask for TSH and ferritin together, one
visit, one draw.

What to do tonight: write down what you have noticed and
take that list to your appointment. “My part is wider and I find more in the
drain” is far more useful to a doctor than “my hair is falling out”.

Three checks you can do yourself, tonight

1. The pull test

Pinch about 50 to 60 hairs close to the root, pull gently, and let go.

The number that matters: six or more hairs coming out with
small white bulbs at the root means active shedding. Under six is normal.

Why it works: a healthy follicle releases hair that has already finished its
cycle, and that hair has already formed a bulb. A hair that releases early, from
a follicle that is still in its resting phase, keeps its bulb. So the bulb is
the tell.

2. The part test

Part your hair down the middle and look at the scalp line in a mirror.
If the scalp is visible along the part where it used to be covered, the part is
widening.

Why it works: density drops before length does. A widening part is visible
months before you would notice hair in the drain.

3. The photo test

Find a photo from three months ago. Same light, same angle, same hair
position. Compare the width of your part, not the length of your hair.

Why it works: memory edits. A photo does not. It is the only one of these
three that is not affected by how you feel about your hair that day.

The words to use at your appointment

Do not say “I think I am losing my hair”. Say this instead:

“My part is widening and I am finding more than six hairs with white
bulbs when I pull. Can we check ferritin and TSH, and tell me if my iron stores
are low enough to affect my hair?”

That sentence moves you from a general worry to a specific question. It is the
difference between a five-minute visit and an actual answer.

The short version

  • Most hair fall is a timing problem, not a volume problem. Hair resting together lets go together.
  • Low iron does not make your scalp dry. It makes your follicle leave early.
  • Thyroid and iron share one blood draw. Ask for both in the same visit.
  • Six hairs with white bulbs is your line. That is active shedding, and it is worth getting tested.

None of this replaces a doctor’s assessment, and a sudden change, patches of
loss, or itching and scaling deserve a proper appointment. But if you have been
told to just eat well and nothing has changed in months, you now have something
more specific to take with you.
